Rights and Responsibilities

As a Canadian citizen you enjoy fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression, religion, assembly and association. You have the right to live and work anywhere in Canada, leave and re‑enter the country freely and obtain a Canadian passport. English and French have equal status as official languages, and men and women are equal before the law.

Citizenship also carries responsibilities. You must obey the law, pay taxes and serve on a jury when called. Voting in federal, provincial and municipal elections is a civic duty. Canadians are encouraged to volunteer, protect the environment and support their community. While there is no mandatory military service, citizens may choose to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.
