Language and Test
During the naturalisation interview you must demonstrate that you can read, write and speak basic English, unless you qualify for an ageโ and residencyโbased exemption. For example, people aged 50 with 20 years of permanent residence, or 55 with 15 years, may be exempt from the English test but must still take the civics test.
The civics test comprises up to 10 questions drawn from a list of 100. You need to answer at least six correctly to pass. Questions cover U.S. history, government and civic responsibilities. Applicants aged 65 or older with at least 20 years of permanent residence may take a simplified version with fewer questions.
