Language and Test

Most adult applicants must prove they can speak and understand English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic at B1 level on the Common European Framework. This can be shown via an approved English test or a degree taught in one of these languages. Some applicants are exempt, including those aged 65 or older or with certain medical conditions.

You must also pass the Life in the UK Test, a 24‑question multiple‑choice exam covering British history, values, traditions and everyday life. You need at least 18 correct answers (75%) within 45 minutes to pass. Children under 18 and people over 65 are exempt from taking the test.
